HOPSCOTCH DRESS

June 27, 2017

Today my two big girls enjoyed a student free day and I decided I needed to make something for Isabella using one of my stretch fabrics. She loves to wear comfortable clothes and prefers to wear leggings and a top rather than a woven dress these days. I don't like seeing my girls in store bought clothes for the majority of the time, so it is time for me to start sewing some more every day clothes.

So I ended up making a hopscotch dress by Oliver + S.  I have had this pattern for about four years. Actually Marte from Compagnie M gifted it to me a long time ago.  I have made the hopscotch skirt which is a fabulous pattern (although I have not shared it). This is the dress/top that comes along with the hopscotch skirt.

I used a gorgeous grey and navy deer print jersey I picked up at Spotlight about a year ago.  I only bought a metre of it, so the hopscotch dress was great because it is economical on fabric usage!  I cut a size 7 but will use a size 8 next time as it is a little on the 'fitted' side.  For the binding I used a cute orange and cream stripe knit that I recycled from a singlet top. I really like the two together.

I used my sewing machine for the bindings, gathering and hem and my serger for the rest.  Using the serger really makes sewing with knits quick, and of course they look great on the inside then too. Because I only had one metre of fabric, I didn't have enough to cut the full size sleeves, so these are my improvised three quarter sleeves!  The pattern also just has the sleeves hemmed but I really liked my binding so added it to the sleeves which also preserved some length.

Isabella says she likes her new dress and promises me she will wear it... so fingers crossed she reaches for it without me asking her to!  I hope to make a couple more of the hopscotch tops for her too.

Do you prefer sewing with woven or knits? What are you favourite knit patterns for girls?
