The Fourth Day of Christmas: LBG Studio

December 04, 2013

On The Fourth Day of Christmas, Vanessa from LBG Studio is joining us to share her festive sewing for Laura and my series.  Vanessa is a beautiful photographer and sewer and I always love the things she makes.  Vanessa has put together a very popular e-book called: Photograph for bloggers which you can purchase here.  I've not read the book, but have heard only great things about it!  Vanessa has some great tutorials that you can see here.  She also sells two cool bag/purse patterns in her shop. Some of my favourite sewing projects she has made lately are this sally dress, this gorgeous shirt.  If you don't know Vanessa's blog, I'm sure you will be impressed by her lovely style, photography and general creativity!

Hello! Vanessa here from lbg studio. First, let me say thank you to Suz and Laura for inviting me to be a part of this fun series! It took me a while to decide what to make because, let's be honest - the possibilities are endless - but in the end, I decided to make something that really fit with how we celebrate Christmas. I came across this awesome (and free!) tutorial by Melly Sews for making a child sized robe and just knew it would be perfect for my kiddo to wear on Christmas. A quick trip to Joann's for flannel and I was all set to sew. If you're looking for a super cute, easy to make, and inexpensive gift to make for your kids - this is it!

Growing up with a German mum, we celebrated Christmas on Christmas Eve. We would have a big dinner and then my sister and I would have to make ourselves scarce so Santa could drop off the gifts.  We could stay up as late as we wanted to play with our new stuff. Christmas day was spent sleeping in and relaxing. Our family moved around a lot because of the military so it was always just the four of us on Christmas since we rarely lived close enough to relatives to visit. That meant that instead of spending the day driving around from one celebration to another, we spent our day at home in pj's. We also got lots of German goodies sent to us every year . . advent calendars with chocolate, lebkuchen cookies, and more. Luckily, we eventually moved to Germany and I got to experience going to a Weihnachtsmarkt (Christmas market). Words can not describe just how incredibly awesome it is. . . the pretty lights, delicious food, and festive crafts are  the embodiment of Christmas cheer. I can't wait to take Syd one day!

These days, I really look forward to Christmas Eve / Day as an opportunity to slow down, relax, and enjoy the simple things. Life is so busy for most of the year and it is rare for us to spend 2 whole days just sitting around at home with no worries of having to be somewhere. We have a big dinner on Christmas Eve and Syd gets to open one gift. The rest of the gifts get opened the next morning followed by a big breakfast and spending the day in pj's while watching movies and eating snacks. Which leads me back to why I made a robe for Syd to wear on Christmas. I really liked the idea of making something cozy and warm to for her to wear while we relax and that it is something she can use year round! The flannel I chose is navy blue and features stylized whales as well as little hearts. SO CUTE!

Merry Christmas!

Thank you Vanessa!  I am definitely pinning this as inspiration for some robes for my girls when they grow out of their current ones.  I love the idea of staying cosy on a cold Christmas day.  Thank you for sharing with us!

On the fourth day of Christmas, my true love sent to me,
Four calling birds,
Three French hens,
Two turtle doves,
And a partridge in a pear tree.

  1. Love that idea. And this is a really stylish robe! I'm German. So we indeed celebrate on Christmas Eve, then the next to days we celebrate with my family (parents, sisters and families) and my husbands family (parents and sister and family). Fun to read that Vanessa has a german mom. Vanessa, if you ever come to Germany to show Syd some nice Weihnachtsmärkte, please contact me. I'd be glad to give you some advice and maybe even to meet at one with you ;)

  8. Lovely robe, Vanessa!
I like the contrasting top stitch. Did you make it yourself or was it already part of the fabric design?
