Dolman dress - Take II

February 12, 2017

Did you follow sewpony when we lived in Melbourne? Most of our photographs were taken against our side fence.  The fence has been absent for the past three years in my blog posts.  Luckily for me though, our next door neighbours have one, and it provides a good neutral and non distracting back drop for this dress.  After making the blue and white striped dress for Emily for kinder a couple of weeks ago, I really wanted to work on the design and improve the fit and draft it properly.

I have had this beautiful fabric in my stash for over a year and kept picking it up and putting it down. I decided to use it for this project and love how it looks sewn up. It is by one of my favourite designers, Pat Bravo and is called 'tapestry in salmon'.  I bought it from Hawthorne Threads and notice it is on sale at the moment.  Fabric is so cheap in America!! For this version, I piped the shoulder seams and added little bows at side/bodice/skirt seams made from coral/salmon coloured bias binding.  I wanted to add big patch pockets over the side seams, but all the fabric was used up with the full skirt, which I didn't want to scrimp on. Unlike the blue and white dress, this one has a square neckline which is identical at the front and back and closes with an invisible zip.
This dress is so quick to make! Proper shoulder covering sleeves, without having to worry about creating a separate piece. Love that.
Emily is growing up fast...she will be five in a few weeks!! She is so excited as this year she will have her first ever 'friends' birthday party.  She hasn't made all of her friends yet as she has just started with her new kinder group....but she has three weeks!  Emily is so well loved!  She is smart, crazy, happy, extremely funny and the sweetest little girl!

  1. She is such a sweet girl indeed :) Her new dress looks wonderful. Love the square neckline. I too love it when a dress/top provides coverage for shoulders without me having to set in the sleeves haha
