MOIANO FOR ISABELLA
June 05, 2017
The weather here in Warrnambool is certainly getting chilly. Each morning Juliette wakes up and asks me, "is it going to be warm or cold today Mummy?" I have told her that for the next three months at least, my answer will be, 'cold'. She needs to know this so she can decide whether to wear a cardigan and tights with her school uniform. Our winters are reasonably mild in comparison to much of Europe, North America and Canada, for example. It hasn't snowed in my town since 1981 - and that was apparently a big novelty!
Isabella is growing and has begun to outgrow her beautiful hand me down vintage coat. I showed her the Moiano pattern and Emily's coat I made last year. Isabella's special request was to have a coat with fur.
Isabella began getting really excited about the coat. We looked carefully through the fur choices at Spotlight and came across some long pile brown/grey acrylic fur on the roll. Since I only needed 10cm, the cost was only a few dollars. She also chose some blue soft denim for the outer and I suggested the gorgeous Rashida Coleman Hale print called "flotsam and jetsam" (one of my Dad's favourite pieces of the english language!!) for the lining, which I ordered a few weeks before from Miss Matatabi. The peach colourway is not available from Frances at present, but the 'sand' version is just as gorgeous. The selvage on the fabric was so cool that I used a portion as the coat hook.
The coat came together nicely. I reduced the depth of the hood to accommodate the fur addition. My welt coat pocket placement was a bit low (oops), as I was too lazy to fish out the pattern piece so guessed the position. A fully lined coat is time consuming to make, since you are essentially making two garments in one. That said, I can highly recommend the Moiano coat pattern. The lining technique is fabulous and there is minimal hand stitching involved. I am tempted to have a go at making one for myself like Eva did with the Berlin coat pattern! I slightly regret having chosen a lightweight fabric for the outer shell. Emily's coat weight was a great choice as it has worn so well and needs no ironing at all. It was actually from the heavier upholstery section of Spotlight. Isabella's, on the other hand, will need ironing after washing and occasionally in between.
In spite of this, Isabella LOVES her new coat!!! She was so excited to wear it on her school excursion the other day and wore it to bed the first night I made it!! This makes me happy!

Oh Suz, what a beauty! I really love the coat, and especially the fur around the hood. I also must say that you have seriously changed my perception of Aussie weather :-D As for the pocket placement: placing it too low was exactly the mistake I made with my first test version of the pattern. ;-)
ReplyDeleteOh I wonder what you thought of Aussie weather before? We are far south of the country so we get cool and rainy winters. Love the pattern thank you!
DeleteA coat that doubles up as a winter nighty is a win ;) But seriously, it looks great! The fur trim is such a fun detail.
ReplyDeletethanks Jenya!!
DeleteWhat a lovely coat! I love the fur around the hood. While you are preparing for winter, we are looking forward to summer. Although our weather is rather gloomy today.
ReplyDeleteI know!! Thanks Marjolein!
DeleteThis looks fantastic with the fur - extra cosy. And just in time for the cold spell (assuming you're having similar weather to Melbourne...?). Isabella is an adorable model!
ReplyDeleteThank you Marisa! Yes similar weather if not a bit colder here ☃️
DeleteThank you for taking the time to comment - it makes my day☼
