2014 is here...and so is Secret Squirrel!!!

January 06, 2014

I always find the new year a strange time...a new date to get used to, reflections on the year that has passed and looking forward to the year ahead.  I have enjoyed having a little break from sewing and blogging over the past few weeks.  We have just bought a house and moved to the country so I am going to be super busy with house and garden this year....I will write a blog post about our new place soon....

But today, I am filling you in on what Secret Squirrel has been up to!!  Secret Squirrel has travelled several continents so far and is now over halfway through his round the world trip.  He has travelled to a new continent this month and I can't wait to find out more about the blog he has visited and to see what this blogger has made with the acorns she was given by Jenya from While she was sleeping in Victoria, Australia.

St Basil's cathedral; Snowflake; Buttons; Harry Connick Jnr; A long time ago.

Here is a sneak peak of the outfit made incorporating these acorns....

Secret Squirrel is a little delayed this month due to some festive partying!  The next blogger to take on the challenge will have until March 1st to post their creation to allow for a bit more time.  If you would like to be the next Secret Squirrel host, please click HERE and leave a comment on this blogger's post.  Comments to apply to host will close on January 14th.

Secret Squirrel Stop # 1: Straightgrain to sewpony

July 01, 2013

Secret Squirrel landed in Australia from Belgium three weeks ago.  After three days in quarantine, he was released here in Melbourne and let free to inspire me to sew... An asked Secret Squirrel to pass on these five acorns of inspiration to me to create an outfit for one of my three daughters...
I sat and pondered and started writing down ideas....I decided to challenge myself to incorporate all five acorns of inspiration to create my outfit.  My thoughts were:

Acorn # 1:  A mandarin duck - tricky...colours, a photoshoot at the boathouse with Juliette eating mandarins? (a bit of a loose connection), feathers??;
Acorn # 2:  'not done' ... I can incorporate this with acorn # 4
Acorn # 3:  A painting by Japanese artist Ando Hiroshige (see larger image here)... I immediately thought of a Japanese kimono and started hunting on ebay for a kimono piece that resembled the painting;
Acorn # 4:  'pleat'...I decided to incorporate this with acorn # 2 and thought of Marta from do guincho's beautiful 3D pleated dresses that she kindly posted a tutorial on.  Fabulous - I had been looking for an excuse to make one of these dresses!
Acorn # 4:  Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong.   Hmmm.... the only song that immediately came to mind was "Let's call the whole thing off" (you say potato, I say potarto....).  I started googling their compilations and realised I knew a few from their titles.  "I've got my love to keep me warm" was the one I decided to work with (You can hear the song here.).  I imagined a faux fur vest with hearts incorporated somehow.

I finished this outfit on Friday night (at midnight mind you).  Luckily Juliette obliged on Saturday morning and I got some sweet shots of her in Secret Squirrel outfit......and here it is!!

Let's 'break it down.....'

The dress

Acorns - 'not done', 'pleat' and Ando Hiroshige's painting;
Pattern -  A-line dress (I adapted my Debbie's birthday dress pattern which I am excited about - it is currently being tested by some fabulous bloggers as well as my sister and good friend).  The hemline is a little shorter in this version.  I used my friend Marta from do guincho's 3D pleated dress tutorial;
Fabric - Chocolate brown gabardine with Japanese kimono pocket.  The pleats are stitched with fawn embroidery thread. The dress bodice is lined with a fabric I picked up at my local fabric store (Spotlight).  I chose it as it co-ordinated with the kimono piece.  It is not my usual style but I think it goes well with the whole outfit.  The print was called "Sakura's Melody" (an exclusive print for Spotlight).

The faux fur vest
Acorn:  Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong duet: Got my love to keep me warm.
Pattern:  Self drafted - I will be posting a tutorial within the next week or so.
Fabric: Faux fur from a Melbourne fabric retailer - GJ's Fabric.  Lined with the same Japanese quilting fabric used to line the dress bodice.  The heart pocket was a piece of the kimono fabric.

The hair clip
Acorn:  Mandarin duck.
Materials:  Dyed feathers and cross grain ribbon.
I bought some dyed feathers from my local craft store and chose thin cross grain ribbon in the colours of the gorgeous Mandarin duck.  I picked out the feathers to match and glued them with craft glue to one of the girl's clips.  I think it would actually look really cool as brooch or scarf tie too.
I was initially a bit worried that incorporating all five acorns into the outfit might look a bit mismatched, but I think the whole outfit came together cohesively and I am really happy with how everything turned out.  The vest is so soft and Juliette says it feels like a pussy cat.

And now...I have the super fun task of passing on five acorns of inspiration to a blogger who is willing to take on the challenge...that is....Secret Squirrel!!!

And here they are...

1.  Tangerine; 2. Patch; 3. Anne of Green Gables - with the hand of her one true love...Gilbert Blythe (did anyone else dream of marrying 'Gil'??); 4. Australia; 5. Something old.

If you would like to be the next blogger in the Secret Squirrel series, leave a comment to let me know.  'Expressions of interest' via comments will close by Saturday  evening (8.00pm Australian Eastern Standard time), after which I will carefully consider and email one blogger to carry on the Secret Squirrel mission.  The email will be sent out by next Monday (July 8th) at 6.00pm (AEST).

If you do not hear from me, you can still sew along!  An and I are working on some cool prize packages for the best sew along outfit as well as the best official blogger outfit.  Read all about the ins and outs of this series and the sew along in our initial Secret Squirrel post.  You can upload your photos into the Secret Squirrel flickr group (But NOT UNTIL the 2nd of August).

Stay tuned and keep an eye on your inboxes...Secret Squirrel is ready to be set loose!!

Introducing...SECRET SQUIRREL!!!!

June 25, 2013

You may have seen this little mammal popping up here and there...Well it’s time he was formally introduced!
For the past six weeks, An from Straightgrain and I have been scheming and conspiring to bring you….
Secret Squirrel!!!

Secret Squirrel is one top secret agent whose mission is to deliver acorns of sewing inspiration to bloggers around the world…
Curious???

Let us to tell you more…Secret Squirrel is gearing up for an epic journey, where he will travel to bloggers far and wide, once per month for a year.  We know where his journey will start and where his journey will end, but what happens in between is up to those up to take on his sewing challenge.  He will deliver emails to willing bloggers to create an outfit for their child based on acorns of inspiration passed on to them by previous bloggers who have met and conquered his missions.
So let us divulge the nitty gritty of the sewing series that is Secret Squirrel…

So what are acorns of inspiration?

Anything you like: a colour, an adjective, a song, a picture or photo, a sewing term, a verb, a food, a pastime, a proverb… let your imagination guide Secret Squirrel on his most important mission.  From little things, big things grow.  From five acorns of inspiration, comes one giant oak of a creative outcome (in the form of something your child can wear)!

Where will Secret Squirrel go?
Secret Squirrel is currently traveling from Antwerp, Belgium, to Melbourne, Australia. There, he will start the first leg of his mission:
1 July, 2013: Start: Suz from sewpony
1 August, 2013: ?
1 September, 2013: ?
1 October, 2013: ?
1 November, 2013: ?
1 December, 2013: ?
1 January, 2014: ?
1 February, 2014: ?
1 March, 2014: ?
1 April, 2014: ?
1 May, 2014: ?
1 June, 2014: ?
1 July, 2014: An from StraightGrain
He will complete his mission in Antwerp, Belgium. The entire year, An and I will keep track of his mission on this special Secret Squirrel page on our blogs, continuously updating the map below and linking to those he visits.
Secret Squirrel’s journey is up to you!

What we love about Secret Squirrel is that he is his own rodent mammal… We can’t tell him where to go… he will be lead by those he visits and that is what makes this all so very exciting!  From Belgium, to Australia, to…Iceland?  He will travel many miles and make many new friends. This is his most important mission to date!!

So we hope you will welcome Secret Squirrel into your hearts (and your inboxes) and embrace his mission of spreading his inspiration to create fabulous clothing for our little ones. If you would like sew along and help spread the word on Secret Squirrel, feel free to put the button below on your blog and also to add your creation to the Secret Squirrel flickr group. But please, do not blog or add your creation to the group until the second of the month so as not to detract from the blogger who receives the official secret squirrel mission.

At the end of the series, Suz and An will make a selection of their favorite projects, and popular vote will decide who wins two fantastic prizes (scroll down to find out!)

He is super excited to unveil his first five acorns which  were given to Suz two weeks ago...
